Huskie Motorsports is a student group dedicated to the global student design challenge of designing, constructing and marketing of a prototype formula style racecar based out of the University of Saskatchewan.We are always looking for a dedicated group of students of every college at the U of S to help design, build, cost, market and drive this vehicle. In addition to this, we are always looking for more sponsors within the Saskatoon Community. Last year in FSAE California we managed to finish 37th overall taking 7th in Cost, 7th in Presentation, 28th in Design, 21st in Accel, 33rd in Skidpad and 40th in Auto-X. We had a tough break near the end of competition with a water pump seal failure and were unable to complete the endurance event, in which we had competitive times.

About Us

Huskie Motorsports is an interdisciplinary group of University of Saskatchewan students working together to design and build an open wheeled formula style race car to compete in the Formula SAE (FSAE) student design competition. The team is very interdisciplinary, involving students from all of the different engineering disciplines, students from the Edwards School of Business, College of Arts and Science and many of the other colleges.This group of students is very dedicated and all are working towards the common goal of becoming a world class team in the FSAE design series.Formula SAE is a student design competition governed by the Society of Automotive Engineers International. Each year, teams from schools around the world gather to compete. In North America, annual competitions are held in Romeo, Michigan, at the Ford Proving Grounds and in Fontana, California at the California Speedway. Students conceive, design and fabricate open wheeled, formula style race cars that resemble scaled down versions of Formula One race cars. For the competition, students assume a manufacturing firm has hired them to produce a prototype race car intended for the nonprofessional, weekend racer. The car must be low in cost, easy to maintain, reliable and have very high performance. The projects are evaluated on a number of categories including: concept presentation, engineering design, cost, acceleration, handling, fuel economy, and high performance track endurance. The competition gives students experience in a meaningful engineering project to supplement the theoretical training they receive in the classroom. The Formula SAE competition has become a high profile event recognized by the media and thousands of spectators and competitors from across Canada, the United States, and around the world.For more information about our competition, please see: http://students.sae.org/competitions/formulaseries/

Sept 26, 2011 This year we have seen a great turnout of both returning and new members and looks to be a promising year. We are still looking for new members who are interested in designing and/or building a fsae vehicle. If you are interested, check out our weekly meeting at 7:00pm on Tuesday in room 1B71. If not then, find us in the shop, Saturdays in the Hardy Lab. This last week we voted in our team leads, it is great to see who has stepped up to the plate, it also shows the promise our team has for years to comeSept 12, 2011 Last week Huskie Motorsports was able to compete in the Super Slalom event held at Credit Union Center. We were putting up good lap times and giving our drivers some good seat time until the engine seized. If you are a gearhead and are looking for engines to rebuild then do we have jobs for you (note plural). But for anybody interested about finding out what we do and what we are about, come out to our meetings this week. We have an introductory meeting Tuesday at 7:00pm in room 1B71, we will also be having a meeting where we review the different components and designs of the car. This meeting will be on Thursday at 7:00pm in room 1B71. We took our latest car, S7, to competition in sunny Fontana, California in June to compete in the four-day international FSAE California design series. We were able to compete in all seven static and dynamic events presentation, cost, design, acceleration, skid pad, autocross and endurance and put on a good showing, placing 7th of the 80 registered teams in cost and presentation and showing competitive times in the driving categories. This has been our most successful year, accumulating the most points at competition of any Huskie Motorsports team, and placing 37th out of the 80 teams. Unfortunately, we sprung an oil leak halfway through the final endurance event and were pulled off the track. Congratulations to our competition drivers Jesse Shields, Brittany Mooney, Scott Fraser and Chris Reid for a job well done, and a huge thanks to all those who were involved with the team last year. For those new kids on the block (and the seniors who have always wanted to join) our first team meeting is Tuesday, September 13th at 7:00 pm in Room 1B71. In a few short words: we design, build, and drive Formula SAE racecars and were always looking for new members from all colleges. Notably, were on the prowl for a new Marketing Director this year so if you're business savvy or have some friends in ESB, give them a call and come check us out! Formula SAE 2011 - June 15-18, 2011 Huskie Motorsports drove to California Speedway in Fontana, CA to compete at the 2011 Formula SAE West Competition. 80 other teams were in attendance to showcase the year's worth of work. While at competition our team passed the technical inspections without too much difficulty. Competed in all the events with a few minor problems with electrical shielding of the shifting components and a few rogue fuel issues. In our final event, endurance, we developed an oil leak which was discovered at the driver change and our team was disqualified. Despite the disqualification we were running times comparable to top 10 teams in endurance which was very reassuring and a great goal for improvement to next year. Competition Results:Design: 28th (74pts.)Presentation (Marketing): 7th (66.7pts.)Cost: 7th (76.6pts.)Acceleration: 21st (47.5pts.)Skid pad: 33rd (8.5pts.)Autocross: 40th (7.5pts.)Endurance: DNFEconomy: DNFOverall: 37th (181.3tps.) Following the competition, most of our team stayed behind to compete in Calspeed's Father's Day Endurance race (4 hours!!). At this event the team had a ton of fun competeing wheel to wheel with our teamates as well as American Le Mans Series drivers. Our fastest driver turned out to be 6% slower than the ALMS fastest drivers. A great finish to an otherwise emotional weekend.

S1
S1 was Huskie Motorsport's first car and it competed in Detroit in 2000. We have given it the nickname "Tank" because of its rugged design and ability to take alot of punishment. Specifications:Weight: 620 lbsEngine: Honda CBR 600 F2 Hurricane producing about 100hp and 50ft-lb torqueDrivetrain: Torsen limited slip differential, 6 speed sequential transmissionSuspension: Adjustable camber, toe, spring rate, and ride height

S2

S2 competed in 2001/2002 and used many diverse construction techniques. It used space-frame and monocoque construction with some CNC machined aluminum parts incorporated into the chassis. S2 was decommisioned for parts for S3 and for shop space.Specifications:Weight: ~550 lbsEngine: Honda CBR 600 F4i producing about 110hp and 50ft-lb torque. When restricted for competition it developed about 55hp.Drivetrain:Torsen limited slip differential, 6 speed sequential transmissionSuspension: Adjustable camber, toe, spring rate, and ride heightPerformance:Better than S1 but poor engine tuning led to a narrow power band. This combined with an overweight chassis led to the eventual demise of S2.

S3
0-60mph in under 4 secondsS3 competed in 2004 and incorporated many things we learned with S1 and S2 into a totally new chassis design. S3 weighs approximately 480lbs and has a greater torsional stiffness. In addition, a better air intake design and better tuning made the torque curve easier to work with when racing.Specifications:Weight: 480 lbsEngine: Honda CBR 600 F4i producing about 110hp and 50ft-lb torque. When restricted for competition it developed about 55hp.Drivetrain: Torsen limited slip differential, 6 speed sequential transmissionSuspension: Adjustable camber, toe, spring rate, castor, and ride heightPerformance:S3 performed much better than S1 and S2 because of a much lighter chassis. When running the engine in its stock configuration and with a driver, the power to weight ratio of S3 is approximately 5.7lbs/hp.
